About us
A small firm with its own crews, and a yard you can visit
Fellgrove has built 310 gardens in 14 years. We are big enough to run four crews at once and small enough that the person who draws your garden is on site when it is built.
Why we do not use subcontractors
Most garden problems come from the bits nobody sees: a thin sub-base, no fall on the patio, fence posts in a spade of postcrete. They happen when the person laying the stone is paid by the square metre and never sees the garden again.
Every one of our crews works for us, on a salary, and is led by a foreman who has been here at least five years. They build to the same written specification on every job, and they come back if something moves. That is what lets us put a 5-year guarantee on the work.
It also means we turn some jobs down. If our crews are booked, we tell you the real start date rather than squeezing you in with someone we have never worked with.
The people you will meet
Two designers, four foremen and a maintenance team. These are the four you are most likely to talk to.
-
Tom Rowell
Founder and lead designer
Trained at a nursery in the Welland valley, started Fellgrove with one van in 2012 and still draws most of the gardens.
-
Anna Kerr
Garden designer
Planting specialist. Writes the planting plans and the watering card every client gets at handover.
-
Dan Birch
Senior foreman
Has laid more sandstone than anyone we know. Runs the crew that builds our biggest terraces.
-
Sam Lowe
Maintenance lead
Looks after the maintenance and lawn-care rounds, and the two gardeners on every plan.

In our clients' words
“They told us the patio would take eleven days and it took ten. The crew swept up every evening, and the lawn they laid in October was the best-looking grass on the street by April.”
What we built
- 62 m² Indian sandstone terrace
- 140 m² new lawn on prepared ground
- Two mixed borders, 38 m²
“We had three quotes. Fellgrove was not the cheapest, but it was the only one that listed the sub-base depth and the drainage. Two winters on, nothing has moved.”
What we built
- Sunken circular terrace with seating wall
- Linear drain to a soakaway
- Low-voltage step lights
“Our garden is steep and we thought it was a lost cause. The design gave us two level lawns and somewhere to sit in the evening sun. Worth every penny of the design fee.”
What we built
- Oak sleeper retaining walls
- Two terraced lawns, 210 m²
- Oak pergola over the seating area
