How we do it

A good border looks effortless because the hard thinking happened before planting day. We start with what you have: soil type, how much sun each bed gets, and how much time you want to spend on it. Rutland clay suits roses, asters and grasses; the lighter ground around Stamford likes lavender, salvias and alliums.

We dig in compost, set the plants out in drifts, and step back before anything goes in the ground. As standard we plant at 2 and 3 litre sizes, so the border looks full by the first July rather than the third. Trees and specimen shrubs come root-balled from November to March.

Every border is mulched to 50 mm and handed over with a one-page watering plan. Anything we plant that fails in its first year is replaced free when you take our aftercare visits.
