How we do it

Fences fail at the bottom. We set every post 600 mm into concrete, use gravel boards so no timber touches the soil, and space posts at 1.8 metres, not the 2.4 that cheaper jobs stretch to. That is why the fences we put up in 2014 are still standing straight.

We build close-board for privacy, cleft chestnut paling for country gardens, and slatted horizontal screens for modern plots. Prices start at £95 per metre for 1.8 m close-board and run to about £140 for slatted hardwood.

Our pergolas are green oak, cut and pegged on site, and planted with climbers the same week so they start covering in the first summer. A 3 by 3 metre pergola starts at £3,200; a longer walk like the rose pergola in our projects runs to £5,400.
