The brief and the build

The owners had a long, narrow garden running down to a paddock and wanted a reason to walk to the end of it. We gave them one: an 18 metre green oak pergola, planted with roses that flower in succession from late May to September.

The oak was cut and pegged on site over five days and set on concrete pads so no timber touches the soil. We planted twelve roses, two per bay, choosing climbers for the posts and ramblers for the top. The walk underneath is self-binding gravel, which drains and does not scatter.

Beyond the pergola, a mown grass walk runs between two double borders to a new cleft chestnut fence along the paddock. The fence was chosen to keep the view open while keeping the sheep out.
